What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is
prescribed by your family dentist or endodontist to treat pain
and/or infection of the dental pulp caused by tooth decay or
physical trauma. Treatment consists of removing the damaged tissue
inside the tooth, sterilizing the root canal system and sealing the
tooth from future infections. Your tooth remains alive by receiving
nourishment from adjacent tissues of the jaw and gums.
After your Root Canal
Treatment
The most important aspect of
root canal therapy is the final restoration of your tooth with a
permanent filling and/or full-coverage crown. It is imperative that
you see your family dentist within two weeks to complete this final
step of your treatment. Six months after your last visit you will be
re-evaluated by our office to determine the success of your
treatment. While there is no certainty concerning healing,
successful results occur in approximately 90% of cases. On occasion,
surgical treatment accompanied by non-surgical retreatment may be
required to restore your tooth to health and function.
